Caring for Braces

The success of your orthodontic therapy has a lot to do with how well you care for your braces during treatment.  Here are some of the most important considerations that our Melbourne patients should keep in mind:

1. Avoid Sticky or Hard Foods

Brackets are glued to your teeth, but they aren’t permanent.  Chewing sticky, crunchy, or hard foods can pop or pull them off.  Opt for steamed veggies instead of fresh, or cut your food up into small pieces.

2. Clean Your Braces and Teeth Thoroughly

Oral hygiene is extremely important.  Because you now have extra surfaces to clean around (i.e. brackets and wires) there are added areas for plaque to build up.  Take your time to brush and floss daily, so that you can avoid the dreaded “white circles” on your teeth when it’s time for your braces to come off.

3. Keep Your Appointments

Putting off your orthodontic check-ups means that it delays our ability to adjust and fine-tune your braces.  As a result, it could make your treatment take longer to complete.

4. Call Us When Something Breaks

If a bracket falls off, a wire comes loose, or a spring goes missing, let us know.  Your teeth have a “memory” and will always want to go back to their old position.  It’s best for our Melbourne orthodontist to replace things quickly, so that your progress can continue as planned.

5. Consider Your Options

Some people find that it’s easier to choose removable aligners such as Invisalign instead of conventional braces.  With Invisalign you can continue brushing and flossing as normal, as the clear braces snap on and off over your teeth.  They make oral hygiene a breeze as well!
